Philippines represented at the IREPAS Conference in Paris, France

The IREPAS (International Rebar Exporters and Producers Association) held its Spring 2015 meeting at the Intercontinental Paris Le Grand Hotel, Paris France.  The event, the SteelOrbis Conference and 72nd IREPAS Meeting is the world’s number one event for long steel products.  Over 300 delegates from around the world attended the event.

The Philippines was represented by the SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation through its President, Benjamin Yao and its Vice President for Corporate Development, Rafael Hidalgo.  Amidst the mostly bleak reports presented by other nations stemming from weak domestic demand and an influx of dumped Chinese steel, the Philippines was noted as a global exception for its strong economic growth and steel demand.  Yao reported that the Philippines which is not a semi-finished steel producer, benefits from the importation of lower priced Chinese steel billets.  These in turn result in cheaper prices for finished products such as rebar, which the construction sector in the Philippines is benefitting from.  Hidalgo also reported that SteelAsia alone imports an average of 150,000 tons of Chinese steel billets every month.
