Carcar Works
Located in Barangay Perrelos, Carcar Works in Cebu houses M4 which is the only rebar rolling mill in the Visayas.
The SteelAsia Group acquired the mill from AC Steel Industries in 2009. The facility was rehabilitated and upgraded its capacity to 300,000 tpy from its original 150,000 tpy capacity. With Level-2 Automation, M4 is at par with world standards of productivity, conservation, and occupational health and safety.
When SteelAsia started up M4 operations Cebu buyers saw rebar costs reduced by over PhP1,000 (US$25) per ton. Cebu consumers and distributors also got huge freight savings, because they no longer needed to transport rebar from Manila.
Mostly using Japanese technology and equipment, the mill has a twin high-speed tungsten carbide monoblock. M4 was the first mill to use this technology, which made it possible to produce small rebar sizes with high precision while maintaining speed and productivity.
Besides the lower rebar cost, the impact of faster delivery was immediately felt by SteelAsia’s clientele.
M4 gave a boost to the region’s business community with increased economic activity for logistics, services, and operations supply. This plant also opened up more employment opportunities for the communities within its vicinity.
The mill operations created so much port activity that today, SteelAsia is among the top taxpayers (for the importation of its raw materials) at the Port of Cebu.
