In an independent assurance engagement, DNV (Det Norske Veritas) the assurance and risk management provider, have recently verified the product carbon footprints for rebar and billet produced at SteelAsia’s plant in Calaca, Batangas, Philippines.

The full assurance statement can be found below.

The assurance engagement covered the ‘cradle-to-gate’ carbon footprint of billet and rebar, prepared according to the GHG Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard. DNV have verified that the CO2 emissions intensity per ton of crude steel (billet) produced is 0.28 tons; 0.36 tons of CO2 emissions are created per ton of rebar produced. This presents a striking contrast to the 2.32 tons of CO2 per ton crude steel average [1] generated by conventional steelmaking [2], where CO2 emissions from SteelAsia Calaca Works is nearly 90% lower.

The mill, which has been operating since 2008, combines recycling technologies with renewable energy. The company’s chairman and CEO, Benjamin Yao, sees the facility as a blueprint for the future. “Apart from rebar, the Philippines imports 90% of its steel, and from high CO2 sources such as China. We intend to replace importation with locally produced green steel.” Yao said.

Yao added, “By 2028 SteelAsia aims to produce 3.5 million tons of green steel per year.” Replacing these imports will avoid 7 million tons of CO2 emissions annually [3]—a reduction equivalent to the carbon capture of 200 million trees.

SteelAsia's green steel expansion will support the Philippines’ national commitment to the 2015 Paris Agreement, a United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) initiative targeting a global temperature increase of less than 2°C by 2050.

SteelAsia is the Philippines’ flagship steel company, with steel mills operating Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and the leading steel supplier for critical public and private construction. It is at the forefront of building a Philippine steel industry and has plans for expanding its product line and steel manufacturing capacity.
